Installation

Do I need to use a tradesman to install my DrinkSure monitors?

- The installation of DrinkSure monitors is very straightforward and can be undertaken by anyone with average DIY skills. All monitors come with clear installation instructions. However, you may feel more comfortable engaging a tradesman to undertake the work for you if you do not feel confident. It is an extremely straightforward job for a plumber.

How close to the drinker does the DrinkSure monitor need to be placed?

- The monitor can be placed at any point in your piping, but each drinker/trough must have its own DrinkSure monitor, see diagrams below. In the diagrams below each of the 3 stables has a drinker. In the diagram on the left (the correct set up), the DrinkSure monitors have been positioned so that there is only ONE drinker fitted below each monitor. This will ensure each stable will have its own consumption measured. In the diagram on the right (the incorrect setup), the DrinkSure monitor will be measuring water supplied to all 3 of the drinkers in the stables. It would not be possible therefore to know how much water had been consumed individually in any of the stables.

How far from the drinker can the LCD unit be placed?

- The DrinkSure 100 Plus has an LCD display connected to the monitor by 3 metres of wire. The LCD display can therefore be placed up to 3 metres from the monitor. If additional cabling is added the remote totaliser can be located up to 1km from the monitor.

My pipework isn't the same diameter as my monitor, how do I fit it?

- No problem! Adaptors are available from most hardware or plumbing shops at very little cost, which will enable your monitor to be successfully attached to piping of any diameter. Because the flow is measured within the monitor, the calibration is unaffected regardless of the diameter of your other pipework.

I don't have automatic drinkers in my yard, can I still use DrinkSure monitors?

- YES! DrinkSure monitors can be attached to any piping including troughs in fields, enabling them to be monitored. They can even be attached to hosepipes so that you can record how much water you put in to buckets or non-automatic troughs.

Do I need any additional fittings?
- No additional fittings are not required unless your piping is a different diameter to the monitor, or you wish to attach your monitor to a hosepipe. If required for these purposes, adapters can be purchased from most hardware or plumbing suppliers at very little cost.

What tools will I need to fit my DrinkSure monitor?
- In order to fit DrinkSure monitors you will only need basic plumbing equipment. To cut any existing pipework you already have fitted you will need a pipe cutter, and to tighten the fittings on the DrinkSure monitor, you will need two adjustable pipe wrenches. No specialist tools are required and the tools listed above should be available at your local DIY store.

Technical

How do I read the counter and dial?
- All DrinkSure monitors are calibrated in litres for easy reading. The main counter shows how many litres of water have been consumed:

This counter is showing that zero litres of water have been consumed
This counter is now displaying that 1 litre of water has been consumed

The secondary dial shows fractions of a litre to give you additional accuracy if you require it. Each of the marks around the circumference of the dial equates to 50mls of water. Therefore if the dial moved from the position in the first diagram (on the left), to the position in the second diagram (on the right), which is 8 marks further round, it would indicate that 8 x 50mls or 400mls of water had been consumed.

Arrow at position zero

The arrow has moved around the dial by 8 marks. Each mark equates to 50mls of water, therefore 8 x 50mls or 400mls has been consumed. 400mls is the same as 0.4 litres.

Therefore if the counter and dial are read together in this example, 1.4 litres would have been consumed.

How do work out what my horse has drunk?
- With the DrinkSure 100 monitor:
To calculate the total amount of water consumed in any period, simply take the last reading you had, from the current reading. e.g. when you read the counter yesterday it said 00000030, and today it read 00000052. To calculate the total water consumption since yesterday simply deduct 30 from 52 = 22. In this example, your horse has drunk 22 litres of water since you took the reading yesterday.
To calculate the average water consumption per hour, simply take the reading as above to calculate the total amount of water consumed, and divide it by the number of hours between readings. e.g. if you took the reading at 10am yesterday, and 8am today, you would divide the total consumption (22 litres) by the amount of hours between 10am yesterday and 8am today (10 hours). You horse's average water consumption in this example would therefore be 22/10=2.2litres/hour.

- With the DrinkSure 100 Plus monitor:
You can calculate the total amount of water consumed manually as for the DrinkSure 100 monitor (above), or simply use the LCD display unit which you reset each time you take a reading.
The LCD display is calibrated in 1/4 litre increments, therefore if the LCD display shows '1', then 250ml (1/4 litre) has been drunk, and a reading of '4' would indicate that 1 litre has been drunk. Therefore to establish water consumption in litres, simply divide the figure on the LCD display by 4. Once you have recorded the reading, press the reset button which will return the LCD display to zero. You will still have to read the dial on the monitor if you wish to be more accurate than to within 1 litre.

To calculate the average water consumption per hour, simply take the number on the LCD display, divide it by 4 (to get it into whole litres) and then divide that figure by the number of hours since the last reading. e.g. if you took a reading and reset the monitor at 10am yesterday, and today the LCD display was showing '88' at 8am in the morning, you would divide the total consumption (88/4 = 22 litres) by the amount of hours between 10am yesterday and 8am today (10 hours). You horse's average water consumption in this example would therefore be 22/10=2.2litres/hour.

Can I reset the counter?
- The DrinkSure 100 Plus monitor has an LCD display that can be reset. The counter and dial on the monitors themselves cannot be reset as they are sealed, tamper-proof units.

How do I reset the LCD display?

Do all the DrinkSure monitors come with a warranty?
- YES! All DrinkSure monitors are ISO 4064 and EEC 75/33 compliant. They carry a 2 year manufacturers warranty, but are built to last much longer!

Do DrinkSure monitors require any regular maintenance?
- NO! DrinkSure monitors are sealed, tamper-proof units. No regular maintenance is required. However, as with all equipment involved with water, it must be protected from frost. Although robust, the monitors should also be protected from the attention of hungry horses!

Do I need an power supply to my DrinkSure monitor?
- NO! DrinkSure monitors do not require any power source. No mains supply is required. The flow of the water through the monitor causes the counter and dials to turn. However, the LCD display on the DrinkSure 100 Plus does require batteries.
